McSween, Jr., and J. Carty McSween IV have served generations of families in Cocke County.
James C. McSween, Jr., has been practicing law and handling real estate transactions in Newport since 1958. Jim graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1953. He then served in the United States Army and the Judge Advocate General’s School in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1958, Jim returned to Newport practice with his father, James Carty McSween, Sr (1898-1962). He served as a United States Magistrate from 1962-1978 and served as Chancellor for the old 13th Chancery Division from 1976-1978. Jim has enjoyed a long practice allowing him to work with his father, his son, James C. McSween III (medical retirement since 1998), and grandson, J. Carty McSween IV. All three of his sons and two of his grandchildren are attorneys.
J. Carty McSween IV has been practicing law and handling real estate transactions in Newport since 2014. He graduated from the University of Memphis School of Law in 2014 and immediately began practicing with his grandfather. In addition to real estate, Carty has experience handling probate, estate planning, and federal income tax matters. Carty and his wife, Caroline, and their two children, Lucy and James, are active members of First Baptist Church of Newport. Carty is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Newport. He enjoys spending time with his family and a host of hobbies.
